ABOUT THE HALL OF FAME

The Hall of Fame has been a dream of Barbe’s for many years, a dream that Bobby Montgomery made come true four years ago with our 1st Annual DSA Hall of Fame on July 22, 2016. This had been an idea pitched for years as a program for honoring our special songwriters from the North Texas area, and a way to raise some awareness in the community about our organization. Always it was said to be such a daunting task to plan such an event, that no director seemed to have the vision to launch the program. Finally, in 2016 the board asked Barbara to make a list of possible honorees and when she came up with a list of over 50 possibilities, VP, Bobby Montgomery took the bull by the horns and ran with it.

In 2016, we honored Blind Lemon Jefferson and T-Bone Walker. Both these players have contributed so much to the roots of all the popular music that has come after. The Stratoblasters were chosen to perform their songs and entertain us.

In 2017, our honorees were Freddy King, Cindy Walker, Sam the Sham, Trini Lopes, Gus Levene, and Al Johnson. The No Contact Band  members included Ian Dickson, Allen Larson, Whit Hyde, Craig St. Clair, and Paul Martin Zander and guest performers Barbe McMillen and Michael Brandenberger all chipped in to cover the songs. The event was held in the Old Bowling Alley at Sons of Hermann Hall.

In 2018, our honorees were Bruce Chanel, Delbert McClinton, Jerry Lynn Williams, Gary Nicholson, Jack Allday and The Nightcaps. The Holland K Smith Band, along with Jack Allday, Barbe McMillen, Jessica Ewy, Alexis Tapp and Joe Milton performed the song of the inductees. The event was held at Love & War in Texas.

In 2019 our honorees were Larry Henley, Steve Miller, Box Scaggs, Stephen Stills and Rod Phelps. The No Contact Band (Ian Dickson, Craig St Clair, Paul Zander, Whit Hyde and Allen Larson) returned to back up the Rising Stars and DSA members Jessica Ewy, Barbe McMillen, Lillly Anatolia, Sophie Rapattoni, Colin Katz, Matt Klinbrink, Caroline Bowen, Caitlin King, Lilly Harrigan, Adelyn Parks and Joe Milton. The event was held at the Sons of Hermann Hall.

In 2020 we were faced with the COVID pandemic and cancelled the event, but by the time 2021 rolled around we were well versed in the workings of Zoom and held the program virtually. Our honorees were England Dan and John Ford Coley, John Denver, Steve Weisberg, Janie Fricke, We had solo performances by Rising Stars, Alyne Taylor, Amby Saenz, Caroline Bowen, Jane Aubrey, Hannah Tanner, Lilly Harrigan, and DSA members Wayne Willingham, Craig St Clair, Eric Ramsey, John Mason, TK Brown, Joe Milton, Bill Martin, Rickey Gene Wright, Allen Larson, Ian Dickson and Cat McGee.  Each year we hope to inspire popular local musicians to take up the task in performing the songs of the honorees. The first year Phil Casteel initiated the Rising Star program, reaching out to local music schools to invite the best talent from each school to perform songs written by our inductees. Music schools that have participated are: Bach to Rock, Dallas School of Rock, Full Dose Music, The Sound Foundation and Kids Who Rock.
Besides honoring songwriters, composers and musicians, we also honor someone who has influenced our industry by serving the songwriter in some way or some songwriter in our community who has served his community in an outstanding way. This is called our community service award. Al Johnson from the Wildflower Festival received this award in the past. Rod Phelps was honored in 2019, Gregg A Smith in 2021 and David Card and Charles McGarry in 2022. youTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oUFMBTD89o
